1) Choose three of the Enlightenment Philosphes that we examined in class and for each explain the strenghts and weaknesses of their form of government. You can use your textbooks or interenet to look up the information if you can't remember it(Mary Wollstonecraft, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, John Locke, Baron De Montesquieu, Thomas Hobbes )
2) Explain which of the various forms of government you believe to be the ideal form of government
3) Do you believe people (the general public) should be able to rule? why or why not?
4) Respond to one other persons post and either support or refute their opinion about their ideal form of government using information from your notes, textbook and or any other resource.
1-Locke: The strength of this philosophy is that he wanted a government with natural rights. The weakness was he went against the Roman Catholic King. I believe the king should rule he is like the president of there time.
ReplyDelete2-Rosseau: The strength of this philosophy is that they wanted free, equal peace, and happiness. He was against the fraud of the the poor by the rich. The weakness is that they cant expect everyone to be the same and have peace everyone should except the religions and each other for who they are.
3-Montesquieu: The strength is the human laws and government. The purpose of that was to maintain law and order, political liberty, and the property of an individual. The weakness was how they looked at the king as exercising executive power balanced by the law making Parliament.
I believe the ideal government out of the three here would be the Montesquieu. It is the most supportive for people and also gives the rulers more sympathy than the other two forms of government.
I dont believe the general public should be able to rule. I think they should be able to have a voice and an opinion. I think if the general public ruled then there would be no discipline and everyone would just do what pleases them this will ruin the government because if everyone does what they want there would be no set government.
I agree with lia, Because if the general public ruled then their would be no set of laws to keep the people in check and to keep from causing chaos and then that means you wouldn't be able to keep from someone taking your land or house because they would just say there is law stating that i cant claim this as mine.. So once again i agree with lia because then there would be chaos among the people
DeleteI agree with you Lia theres too many various opinions to have the general public to rules , and it may cause uproars.
DeleteI do agree with Lia however it depends on the person I don't believe that the throne being down within family trees is efficient or in the best interest of the country.
DeleteI disagree with you Lia about the ideal government. I feel that the best government would be direct democracy. There is a balance of power through that because both the people and government both have power.
DeleteThomas Hobbes - Hobbes believed that an effective government must have an absolute authority. The strength to this is that power would not be limited or divided. This made it so only one person could rule. The weakness to this is that no other has a say in the government making it appealing to the person calling the shots.
ReplyDeleteMary Wollstonecraft- She did not believe in an established government. She believed the people could govern themselves. The strength to this was that there was no one telling them how to live. Instead issues or disputes were most likely settled through conversation or votes. The weakness to this is that without a type of ruler, there is no real law which can cause chaos
John Locke- He believed in a direct democracy. This meant that people were born with natural rights. This was where the people vote on things directly. The strength to this is that the power is put into the people. The only weakness is if the people start to rebel
I think the ideal form of government is a direct democracy. This is because there are still officials except they are completely chosen by the people.
I think the people should be able to rule a certain part of the government in order to keep power divided in a way everything is equal. This is because when government is controlled by only certain people, the people usually rebel in a certain way.
I agree with Amir, i like how the Direct Democracy lets the people have choice and be involved. I like how he agrees with the people having a voice so theres an equal amount of power. I believe if people have an opinion everyone would have a much calmer way of life. And not the voice where the government just say yes and never does anything they say, actually hear the people out.
DeleteI disagree with Amir. I do not like a direct democracy because the people feel very entitled to input their opinion which can lead to insurrection.
DeleteI agree with you Amir, but people can get a little crazy if they have too much power.
DeleteJohn Locke-He believed that every government should have natural rights for their countries citizens which was the strength to his gov't the weakness was that if the people thought the king violated their rights they can kick him out of power.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- He believed that the government should have complete control over everything that no one had a say in it, The strength was that he had no form of limited power. The weakness was that no individual had any say which can lead to conflicts with the government later on.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believed that the people could govern themselves. The strength was that no one can tell you what you can do and if there was a conflict it can be brought to a vote or fixed through meetings. The weakness with out a government or laws chaos would beak out and the country would collapse.
I do believe that some form of a democratic government is good because the people have a say in the governments decisions to an extent where it can alter the rulers choice on the law and or economy.
I agree with Baumann, a democratic government is good and stable but in my opinion i'd say that a Communist government is more stable.
Delete1. Denis Diderot: He produed a 28 volume set of books called the encyclopedia. He abandoned the idea of entering the clergy.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes: He created a book called "Leviathan" that argued that people are naturally cruel, greedy, and selfish. He became disrupted from his philosophic plan.
Rousseau: He wanted to limit controls. He was born almost dying and it was said that he has a very little chance of surviving.
2. I think France under Louis XIV is the ideal form of government because he tried hard to strengthen economy and help the army.
3. I think the public should be able to rule up to an extent because as long as you're living here, you should have rights to speak up and make your own choices. But the public should be conscious about their decisions or leave it up to certain people to rule.
1.Thomas Hobbes- He believed in the government having complete and utter control. This is beneficial in some cases however the aspect were it seemed to lack was its appeal to society if the ruler wasn't to the people of the societies expectations.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- He believed in natural rights as well as a direct democracy. The power comes directly form the people in the society however that can turn out to be a very poor decision since there are many people with different views within a society.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She didn't particularly believe in a government at all,she believed people can govern themselves.
2. I feel the ideal form of government is a monarchy. I feel this way because democracies have to deal with the views and opinions of the people. This means they can also object to notions of the government which can cause a multitude of problems.
3. No, I feel as giving the general public any type of say or authority is ludicrous in the sense that many problems might arise since they would only want laws or rules passed that perfectly suit their life styles rather than taking the rest of society into consideration
I agree with caroline, i feel a monarchy is a ideal form of government, because a monarchy provides the stability to a country, a democracy in many situations is unable to provide that.
Deletei disagree i feel that there would be a lot of riots and civil wars because one religion would be forced upon citizens and taxes would be raised all the time.
DeleteI disagree with you because then people wouldn't be heard and people would be unhappy having only one group make decisions. However I see where you're coming from because It makes things easier for the government but it isn't better in the long run because of the chaos and constant fighting
DeleteI disagree with you because the ideal form of government is one where everyone has a say in government.
DeleteMary Wollstonecraft- She believed the people could govern themselves. The strength to this was that there was no one telling them how to live. Instead issues or disputes were most likely settled through votes or meetings. The downfall to this is that without a type of ruler, there is no real law which can cause chaos
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes - Hobbes believed in absolute authority. The strength to this is that power would not be limited or divided. This made it so that one person could rule. The downfall to this is that no one else has a say in the government making it appealing to the person in charge making the commanding the orders.
I think the people should be able to rule a parts of the government in order to keep power divided equally without stress. When government is controlled by only certain people, the people usually rebel.
Dennis I agree with you because it let's the government workers what their people want and this will enhance the empire because everybody wants to follow
DeleteThomas Hobbes- believed that only a powerful govt could ensure and orderly society. This meant that whatever form of government took place it had to have absolute power meaning that the power may not be shared among to people or let the Parliament limit your powers
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- His belief was that he rejected absolute monarchy , "The best kind of government had limited power and was accepted by all citizens." This meant that he didn't believe in just one person ruling and he supports the form of direct democracy. Which is the form that is similar to how our government is.
Montesquieu- He felt that each branch of government should be able to serve as a check on the other two. This means that he wants the branches of government to support each other and use the power of each group to achieve something. This also means when you you are trying to do something use the other to as a foundation of the plan
I think the ideal form of government is Direct Democracy beause this form let's you work with your citizens and through this you can hear the thoughts and concerns of your people and plan events using what the "people" have said
Thomas Hobbes-He believed that the government should be under full absolutism because it is way to keep the people in order to prevent much crime. Another strength of this form of government is since many of the people will be very ignorant, they will follow the laws put in place by the obediently, not questioning anything. Some weaknesses of this government the unbalance of power. It can cause corruption and a ruler can a irreversible decision that negatively affects the people.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke-Some strengths of his form of government is that the people can have a say in what the government does to benefit them. Which will get rid of the constant worry of riots because the people will be satisfied with all the laws. Some weaknesses is that by allowing the people to shape the government they could make decisions that don't benefit the area politically and economically. Also if people don't like one thing that the government does the will overthrow it and cause much fighting and disagreement.
Mary Wollstonecraft-In her type of government she thought that if people were capable enough to govern themselves and have their own opinions. The strengths about this is that if everyone self governed themselves then everyone will have their opinions and ideas put first and held in more importance. Another strength is that there would be some level of good governments to bad ones throughout the world. The weaknesses is that there would be much more wars and disagreements because of all the governments that would clash. Another weakness is that too many governments would confuse everyone and sooner or later there would be disorder.
I believe that the ideal government would be one where you can shape your own government and it has very limited power. This is so because if a group of people shape the government, they can make their opinions or ideas that they feel strongly about significant and respected.ALso if the government has less power that it wouldn't feel like your freedom is being taken away or your being watched over all the time.
I do believe people from the general public should be able to rule because everyone has different ideas and opinions, so if people get the chance to implement them then we can see what can make a better nation or not.
1.-John Locke- He believed in natural rights but as also believed in a pure democracy. In this society the rules and power all come from him as well as the people, so things don’t always work out because the people have different views.
ReplyDelete-Thomas Hobbes- He believed only the government should have control and power. Which worked out well, even though the people weren't very happy with that.
-Mary Wollstonecraft- She believed in everyone having a say and power, and not all government taking over.
2. I feel the ideal form of government is a monarchy. I feel this way because things would more likely to go wrong if there were many people with power and making up the rules. A form of government with a monarch at the head is much more ideal.
3. I do not feel as giving the whole public society any type of place to be in charge or make any rules is a good idea because many people want different things, and have different minds, and that will just cause complete chaos so my answer would have to be no.
Thomas Hobbes: favored monarchy because decisions could be made quickly. When there is a general public, people debate constantly over issues that end up being unsolved. When only one king is in power, plans go into action and problems is solved immediately, making it easier to control the citizens.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke: believed that citizens should be allowed to overthrow a government official whenever they believe that he is not doing a satisfactory job at protecting the citizen's natural rights, which Locke believed was the whole point of government.
Montesquieu: argued that the best government would be one in which power was balanced among three groups of officials. He thought England - which divided power between the king (who enforced laws), Parliament (which made laws), and the judges of the English courts (who interpreted laws) - was a good model of this. Montesquieu called the idea of dividing government power into three branches the "separation of powers." He thought it most important to create separate branches of government with equal but different powers.
i believe that there should be a general public because new ideas can come out and there would be less riots if decisions fit all people.

ReplyDelete1) Thomas Hobbes: Strength- He created a book called "Leviathan" that argued that people are naturally cruel. Weakness- He was the only one allowed to make laws or do anything in the gov, he wouldn't let anybody suggest something.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke: Strength- The people were able to have a say in their government. Weakness- People didn't always agree with each other and so people started to get angry with one another.
Mary Wollstonecraft: Strength- People can govern themselves. Weakness- It gets out of hand and very hectic.
2) I think a democracy is good because the people have a say in some things. There is not one person telling everyone else what to do. We the people can help the "ruler".
3) I think the public should be able to rule up to a point because people can get out of hand and get a little carried away with the power.
Thomas Hobbes- believed that the government should have complete control. This was beneficial but still did not allow the people to speak on what decisions were made.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- believed in direct democracy and natural rights. All the power came from the people in the society, which could be bad considering a lot of them had different views.
Mary Wollstonecraft- didn't really believe in government. Instead, she had the theory that people, as individuals in the society, could have their own say, their own power, and govern themselves.
I feel the ideal form of government is a direct democracy because the citizens have say on what the government decides, to the point where initial decisions made by the government can be overturned and/or changed.
Thomas Hobes - He believed that his government should be able to supress rebellion, but on a negative note he believed in having absolute power and having others give up the freedom.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- He believed that everyone has natural rights and liberty, on a negative note he believed that people have the right to change a government that fails, but the people don't always know whats right to do.
Baron De Montesque - He created the 3 great branches executive, judical, and legislative. But they praised the king for executive power.
I believe John Lockes was the best form of government because I do like the way that the people can change the government if it fails.
I don't think the general public should be able to rule because there may be several mixed opinions which may cause fights.
John Locke- The strength of this philosophy is that he wanted a government with natural rights for the people however, with people having so much of these rights it caused arguments because of disagreements on things such as the elected government.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes-The strength of Thomas Hobbes idea of absolutism is it kept everyone on the same page and on track giving the government power to do a lot of things. However this could be negative because it's too much power to once person who doesn't always make the best decisions and know everything. Theres no balance.
Mary Wollstonecraft- The strength of Mary's government was that people would always be pleased because they were governing them selves and making their own decisions . The negatives were that their was no control and no rules to follow. People just did what they wanted because there was no one telling them they couldn't making things chaos
The ideal form of government would be a democracy because it truly is the power of the people just under a power who finalizes things, makes things run smoothly and keeps people in check. This would be a fair balance of power.
I do not think the general public should be able to rule because their has to be some sort of higher power that will keep people in check. If people ruled themselves it would lead to a battle of who has more power and who has the best choice with out any type of control or organization
I agree, i feel that if there's no type of control, then there would just be chaos .
DeleteI completely agree with you Kara. There should absolutely be a higher power within a society, if not it's not organized.
Delete1:
ReplyDeleteLocke- Gave citizens a say in who should rule over them depending on how well a person rules.
Wollstonecraft- Believed that the government should not take over full control of people and that people should have power and a say in government.
Montesquieu- Believed that government should be in separate branches so they can each have equal power, yet different powers.
2: I think that Montesquieu had the best idea on government because that is the form of government that is used today in the United States and is best suited for society.
3: People should not be able to rule. They should be allowed to have a say and have their opinions taken into account, but if everyone had the power to rule, things could turn chaotic.
Yes, I do agree with you when you say "If everyone had the power to rule, things could turn chaotic"
DeleteThis is Luciano Cardoza who posted this.
DeleteMary Wollstonecraft- She believed the people could govern themselves. The strength is there no ruler to over power them.. A weakness is basically the same as it’s strength, there’s no ruler to make a set of law which can lead to over powerment of the people and complete chaos.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes - Hobbes believed in absolute authority. The strength to this is that power would not be limited or divided and that there’s only one ruler so there’s more authority. The downfall is that sometimes people become so obsessed with power and could start to make unfair rules and just become a dictator. Also another one is that there’s a lot of responsibility and sometimes one person isn’t capable and people make mistakes so it could lead to a huge crash in the entire government.
John Locke- He believed in a direct democracy. This means that people are born with natural rights and vote for things directly. The strength is that the people gets a say in their government, so things are fair and no over powerment.. A weakness may be that they overthrow the government.
I think the ideal form of government is a direct democracy. This is because it’s balanced. The people get to vote for for what they want, and the ruler doesn’t have complete power.
I think the general public should be able to rule by voting. The people shouldn’t have complete power because everyone thinks differently. I feel that their should be one ruler who must listen to the people, so that everything is in a balanced and fair manner.
Thomas Hobbes: Believed that only a powerful government could ensure an orderly society. the government was an absolute monarchy, which could impose order and compel obedience. However, a ruler with to much given power can take advantage and make everything his way.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke : Believed that the best kind of government had limited power and was accepted by all citizens. But, Having natural rights caused many people to have disagreements on significant matters such as electing officials.
Baron De Montesquieu: Created three separate branches Called the legislative branch, Judicial, and Executive. these are called the Separation of powers where certain branches had certain powers.
I Agree with Baron De Montesquieu Idea. because the separation of powers divides the powers equally, this way there is not only one higher official who has so much authority.
Mary Wollstonecraft- Was a writer, and her ideas and beliefs on women rights, made her a remembered and special women. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is the book that she wrote discussing her beliefs that men should not be viewed as being better than us. She believed that the people should govern themselves and that they should have there have there own opinions and be able to express it. The problem with this idea, is that things could get out of control since there is no one really above them to tell them what is good or bad.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- John believed in a direct democracy, and that the people should govern themselves and that all of there opinions are heard. This is not a good idea, becasue everyone has different opinions, so it would be very hard to get everyone's ideas, and opinions together and narrow it down to one opinion.
Thomas Hobbes- Thomas believed that the government should be in complete control of the people and that they had the say in everything, this could be good to decrease long term decisions, but it also doesn't give the people the ability to share there opinions.
I think the ideal form of government would be a direct democracy because it gives the people the ability to chose people who they think would be good enough to rule them. This gives the people some say in the decisions that are made.
I think that general public should be able to rule because, we are all one community and we are all equal, we should be able to have a say in our lives.
John Locke -believed every government should have natural rights for its people. People had a lot of say in what happened in the government which could cause a lot of controversy.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- He believed that government should have absolute control. This was very unbenefital situation because the peoples needs were not taken into consideration.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believed in everyone having a voice in the governments choices.
I feel that democracy is the best and most effienct form of government because a majority of people's needs and opinions will be represented in government. I feel that the general public depending on their credentials and experience can rule rather then going down by family trees.
Thomas Hobbes: Thomas believed in an absolute monarchy and believed that the civilization should be ruled with strict expectations and that was what he thought would make a powerful government. Something that was effective of Thomas was the creation of social contract. Social Contract which was the agreement between the people and the government, but there was a lot of weaknesses that came from the social contract. Since Thomas was very narrow he thought that the civilization must give up their freedom for liberty and security. Because of the Social Contract the people are were not free, but they were safe, which he thought was better. Life and security was all the civilization could've ever expected from the Social Contract.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke: John preached democracy and believed that the people had a natural ability to govern themselves, and they should listen and take the ideas of others into consideration. John created one of the greatest systems that we still use today which is the ideas of the three branches of government, and the right to life, property, and freedom, even thought I believe John's form of government was brilliant, I believe one of his weakness was that having natural rights caused the people to have many different disagreements on important matters.
Mary Wollstonecraft: Something that was effective in Mary's form of government was that the people in her civilization would always be pleased because they were governing themselves and doing whatever made them happy/making their own decisions .The weakness part of Marry's form of government was that since everyone was allowed to do what they wanted because there was no set of rules that they had to follow people took it upon themselves to really do what they wanted no matter if it was good or bad, and that can lead up to nothing but chaos.
1. Mary Wollstonecraft : Marys strength is.that she believed people could govern themselves. The thing that was wrong with this idea is that was it could cause lots of problems like riots since there would not.be one soul ruler and everyone would ne trying to get there point across. Thomas Hobbes: Thomas believed that in order to have an efficient and effective govt the ruler must have absolute authority. Thomas more or less focused souly on power more then he did on actually improving his nation. John Locke: John believed in natural rights for citizens for example like freedom of speech. If citizens felt like there rights were being taken away they could take him out of power.
ReplyDelete2. Two of the best forms of govt are democracy because people have supreme power so everyone has a voice in what there laws ans rights ate.And authoritaria govt which is where authority is imposed on aspects of peoples lifes.
3. I do believe people in general should be able to rule we as normal general people do it today. Why not let general people rule since laws and almost every aspect of the law and changes affect the citizens.
4. I agree with Caroline when ahe says the.ideal form of govt is a monarchy because people get to express there opnions. And also people get to have a chance and put there input and ideas on what they think is right and wrong in the govt.
John Locke- John believed in democracy. He let people have they're own say in what they wanted to do with the government so the people had the power. Usually letting people have they're own say in the government made a lot of problems
ReplyDeleteMary Wollstonecraft- She let the people in the society make they're own decisions. She didn't really believe in having a government. A lot of people had disagreements because they could have they're own say just like John Locke's government.
Thomas Hobbes- He thought that a government should be ruled very strictly and should have some high expectations. He thought that one person should rule everything. He was very strict to prevent crimes. Not many people were happy with this sort of government.
I think that the general government should be able to rule because if one person is controlling the whole civilization that could end up being a disaster because that one person can mess up one thing and it would hurt the whole community. Like if that one person controlling everything decides to start a war because he doesn't like someone everybody will be in harm.
Jonathan, I disagree with you. If there is a ruler that's creating laws that fits the needs of the majority and the people need someone who is able to rule a large population.
DeleteJohn Locke: Believed in natural rights and freedom of self expression, however, this can lead to unbalanced power if the government is being overthrown.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes: Believed in absolutism, also known as a dictatorship. Although an absolute monarch gets things done right away, the choices being made might not always be the most logical ones.
Mary Wollstonecraft: Believed in self governing because she felt that the people are smart enough to make their own decisions, however, we can't trust that every single person is going to think reasonably.
Personally, I think a democracy is the best form of government because it has less of a chance of destructing,
1) Thomas Hobbes, who wrote the book "Leviathan." in which he explains that people are naturally cruel, greedy and selfish. He also believed the way to govern was by way of a sovereign power. This is a weak because it's true that some people can become corrupt, but also strong because he does argue the natural savagery of humans...
ReplyDelete2)John Locke who wrote the book "Two Treatsies of Government" believed that people formed governments to protect their natural rights. Although he was a radical who believed that the government was solely obligated to the People, he did have legitimate points in saying that we have a natural right to life, liberty and eventually, to property.
3)Baron de Montesquieu wrote the book "The Spirits of the Laws." and believed that the best way to protect liberty was to divide the various functions and powers of the government into the legislative, judicial and executive branches. This was a very strong belief as it is the basis of our democracy today, and I don't see any weaknesses this would pose except having possible corruption.
I believe that it's okay to have people have a say in what should be done, otherwise the rich people may not agree with what the poor people want and vice versa. Having experienced representatives would avoid the troubles.
Essence I agree with your post all the way. I liked how you showed the background of the Philosphes and how you states the weaknesses and strengths of their government
Delete1. Locke's philosophy is that he wanted a government with the natural rights that we still use today. The king at the time was a roman catholic though so it was a challenge. I think that lockes ideas are correct and a government is needed.
ReplyDelete2. Rosseau's philosophy was that he believed that free, equal peace, and happiness was needed. He was on the side of poor people. Nothing is ever going to be equal though especially with religions.
3. Montesquieu wanted a government with rights for the people. He wanted an organized government so that people could have their land and equality.
I believe that the ideal form of government is Locke's philosophy because his way everyone is guaranteed natural rights.
I agree I feel that the people should have a voice in the rules that they have to abide by. I think it is the best way to make a decision if you listen to more than one opinion or point of view.
Delete1.-Mary Wollstonecraft- Believed in everyone having the right to make rules, and not just the government taking control.
ReplyDelete-John Locke- John believed in natural rights but also believed in a pure democracy. In this society as well as the people having rights, so does the government.
-Thomas Hobbes- Only believed the government should have total power, even though not all of the society was happy.
-Mary Wollstonecraft- believed in everyone in the society should have power, to be fair.
2. The ideal form of government is a monarchy. I believe this because things would only work an go better without everyones opinion.
3. I do not feel giving the society any type of place to be in power is a good idea, and will only cause chaos.
Thomas Hobbes- believed in that only a powerful government could ensure an orderly society.A government was an absolute monarchy, which could impose order and compel obedience. He supported the Stuart Kings in their struggles against parliament. He said to escape "brutish" life people entered into a social contract, and agreement by which they gave up the state of nature for an organized society. Hobbes thought of people as naturally cruel, greedy, and selfish. If not strictly controlled, they would fight, rob,and oppress one another. He published his ideas in a book titled Leviathan.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- John had more of a optimistic view on human nature. People to him were reasonable and moral. They had natural rights, or rights that belonged to all humans from birth. these included the right to life, liberty, and property. In Locke's book Two Treaties of Government he argued that people formed governments to protect their natural right. he thought that the best kind of government had limited power and was accepted by all citizens. He rejected absolute monarchy and sided with Parliament in its struggle against Stuarts. To him a government has the obligation to those it governs. If a government fails its obligation the people have the right to overthrow the government.
Baron de Montesquieu- he published The Spirit of the Laws in 1748. He discussed governments throughout history and wrote admiringly about Britain's limited monarchy. He felt that the British had protected themselves against tyranny by dividing the functions and powers of government among three separate branches. To him the separation of power was the best way to protect liberty.
I believe that the best form of government would be John Locke's idea because we are the people and we have to have the power to over throw someone if they aren't doing a good job.It sour country and we make up the laws. I also agree that there shouldn't be alot of power in a government.
I agree with you Anisa, John Locke has had a great influence on the form of government we use today. Such as the natural rights he spoke of that helped carve the U.S.'s government.
Delete1. Locke- Wanted a government with natural rights because he believed in direct democracy. The weakness was that he went up against the Roman catholic king.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- Believed that an affective gov't should have authority. The government was an absolute monarchy. He published his ideas about his opinions about the government and people in his book titled Leviathan. Weakness was he believed that the people should give up their freedom for protection and security.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believe that people can take care of themselves govern themselves. That was the strength because people had a lot of freedom. But it was also the weakness because their was no ruler to govern the people.
2. I think the ideal form of gov't is monarchy because not everyone's opinions matter and that would make it easier to operate.
3. I believe that the best form of gov't would be John Locke's idea because the people should decide who rules them and if they can overthrow someone if they are not doing a good job being a leader.
1)
ReplyDelete1) John Locke- Locke believed in a direct democracy and most importantly he believed in natural rights. One strength was that it gave the people a voice in what they thought was right for society. One weakness is that with several different opinions and view it can become hard to come to an agreement.
2) Thomas Hobbes- Hobbes believed in an absolute government giving one person complete power. He believed that people were cruel, greedy and selfish which could be true sometimes. But in a way I think that all people are entitled to their own opinion and sometimes it's good to hear different viewpoints. One weakness is that in some cases one person having power can ruin the people by one person making all decisions.
3) Baron de Montesquieu- He believed that government power should be balanced amongst three groups of officials such as, legislative, judicial, and executive branches. One strength was that there were various opinions and there were different people in charge of different functions.
2) I believe that the ideal form of government is where the people have a voice in which they feel is best for their world. I think that when the government gives the people the opportunity to voice their opinion their is less violence and dispute.
3) I think that giving people in the general public that type of power would only end up in disarray. I feel that people would only think about what was best for the personally and not take everyone into consideration.
1.Thomas Hobbes- Thomas Hobbes believed that the government should have complete and utter control.
Mary Wollstonecraft- Mary Wollstonecraft believed that there shouldn't be a government, she thought that the people should govern themselves.
2. I feel the ideal form of government is a direct democracy because it would allow the people to be involved in their governments, and everyone's opinions would be considered. .
3. No, I feel as giving the general public any type of say or authority is absurd in the sense that many problems might arise. The people would only make laws that suit their needs and not the needs of the majority.
1) John Locke- John Locke believed in direct democracy. He also believed in natural rights for the people. This is a fair government since the ideas are coming straight from the people.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- Thomas Hobbes believed in absolutism. I feel that this is unfair because the people won't have a say, and if the people disagree with the ideas of the ruler, there will be a lot of rebellions towards the ruler.
Baron de Montesquieu- Baron de Montesquieu believed that government should be balanced out among 3 branches. (Legislative, judicial, executive) I feel like this goes along with direct democracy because it helps with the power.
2) I feel that direct democracy would best the ideal government because the government has power, and so does the people. They both balance eachother out.
3) I don't feel that the general public should rule because I think that there should be one ruler, with other inputs so that other people can be involved, and they have some sort of control, but not full control.
1) John Locke- He believed that people should have natural rights in a direct democracy. Not only the government has to take over but the people have a say in anything in the government, they can also oppose .
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- He believed that the government should have total control of the country and it would be beneficial in various ways.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believed that the people could make their own government. The good part about having a democracy is that you can vote and have a say in the government as opposed to not having one, it would be a mess and chaos.
I think the ideal form of government for me would be an absolute monarchy because like Louis XIV he had the strongest country. His army, economy and his people were all at his service. I think that this is better because someone actually knows what they are doing.
No, I dont believe that a general public should be able to rule because sometimes people with experiences are better than people who have no experience.
Baron de Montesquieu - Thought that Britain's limited monarchy was exceptional, through the form in which power was divided among three branches, legislative, judicial and executive. (Although Montesquieu had apparently misunderstood the British system) Each branch could balance out the other two. Through this method of government we see a positive note in distribution of power. It can be arguable the amount of time it could take to get things done with such a way of government.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes - Argued that an absolute monarchy was the correct form of government due to the natural cruelty, greed and selfishness of people. A powerful central government can make decisions swiftly and evasively. This is less time consuming and be of good nature for the people under rule. But if you have a ruler who seeks only to benefit him/herself it could be catastrophic for the people, becoming slaves to a higher power, resulting in revolts, civil wars and more. (In whole, with a menacing ruler, the land under rule can possibly not progress and fall behind on a global scale becoming prey for countries who wish to obtain more land.)
Jean-Jacques Rousseau - Believed in a direct democracy where the very people , through their own will, determined which laws to follow for the better of the community. He believed in social contracts in which people choose to give up self-interest in favor of the community. The fault here is that because every individual could have a different opinion, it is possible that disagreements could lead to civil wars among the people. (One of many possibilities)
I believe that a mixture of forms and ways of different governments could lead calm and peaceful lives for the people. Although, I cannot look past the most common reason for the downfall of civilizations which is the natural greed, selfishness and evil of people, just as Thomas Hobbes said. I do not think that a sole ruler is the answer, but no matter the form of government there will always be people who have mal intentions. Those who want more and more, who wish to inflict pain upon others and make them into minorities. Yes, democracy has been somewhat kind to the people, but to what extent are we really free? And of course what can I say, if we were truly free the statistics for crimes and immoral actions would sky rocket through our atmosphere to a new galaxy. Humans need to have rules and restrictions without a doubt, it is just the way in which we have been given these rules that cause our corruption. The fact that we are not the very ones that have set these rules upon ourselves that makes some want to rebel and act out.
The people should have the right to influence and speak within a government, or else we are considered slaves to another group or individual are we not?
- John Locke: believed that people should be allowed to have natural rights since they were apart of a direct democracy. As well as the government, the people also had a voice in what they wanted. They also had the opportunity to disregard an idea of the government.
ReplyDelete- Baron de Montesquieu: believed that Executive, Legislative, and Judicial were the 3 ways that a government should be balanced out. This benefits the people and is a stronger support for the voice of the people.
- Thomas Hobbes: believed that the government and ONLY the government could have control over a nation. He thought it was a good idea.
The ideal form of government would be a direct democracy because the people still have a say in what they want and the ruler will try their best to make sure the people of their nation are satisfied.
The general public should not be able to rule because everyone would try to add their extra inputs and 2 sense. That way, there'd be no exact ruler, which would cause everyone to think that they all control when they really don't. Everyone would just be dictating to each other.
1) Locke: The strength of this philosophy is that he wanted a government with natural rights. He went against the Roman Catholic King
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- Thomas Hobbes believed that the government should have complete and control.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believe that people can take care of themselves govern themselves.
2) The ideal form of government is a monarchy. I think this because things would be better without everyones opinion.
3) No, I feel as giving the general public any type of say or authority because there will be problems and those problems might create chaos
Thomas Hobbes- believed that the government should have complete control. This was somewhat helpful but it still didn't allow people to have a saying whether a decision in the government was a good or bad idea.
ReplyDeleteJohn Locke- believed in direct democracy and natural rights. All of the power pretty much came from the people that ran society itself.
Mary Wollstonecraft- didn't really believe in government. she believed that people could govern and pretty much take care of them self and take situations into their own hands.
I feel the ideal form of government is a direct democracy because the citizens have the right to express themselves. They have an impact in the government and their voice can be heard.
John Locke:Wanted a government that provided natural rights and went against the Catholic Church
ReplyDeleteRosseau:He wanted everyone to be treated equally, he was also against the is treatment of the poor by the rich and wealthy but his weakness was that not everyone in the nation or world have the same thoughts or be the same.
Thomas Hobbes: He believed that only the government should have the complete power and that the people didnt have any say, which was one of the weaknesses, its civilians had no power which led to a problem
i think that Democratic when used properly can be a very successful form of government cause everyone is able to have say and is equal and free, and i do believe the general pepole should have some power to rule, but not to much which can lead to chaos.
John Locke- He believed in a direct government where everyone had natural rights and you could have freedom. He wanted a control and organized government. He believe power came form the people and that it should stay that way.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- He believed the completely different type of government compared to John Locke. He believed in an absolutism. He thought that only one person should rule and that it should stay that way. He didn't think that people deserved rights.
Baron de Montesquieu- He believed in three types of branches the legislative, judicial and executive, which is like our type of government today. Each branch was made to balance out each other so no branch was more powerful.
I think that a democracy would be the ideal type of government. I also think that the general public should have power if I believe in a democracy A democracy was created so that everyone can have a little bit of power and not one person is over ruling .
John Locke-He believed that every government should have natural rights for their citizens which was the strength to his gov't. the weakness was that if the people thought the king violated their rights they can kick him out of power.
ReplyDeleteThomas Hobbes- He believed that the government should have complete control over everything and what the citizens could say or do The strength was that he had no form of limited power. The weakness was that no individual had any say which can lead to conflicts with the government later on.
Mary Wollstonecraft- She believed that the people could govern themselves. The strength was that no one can tell you what you can do and if there was a conflict it can be brought to a vote or fixed through meetings. The weakness with out a government or laws chaos would break out and the country would collapse.
I do believe that some form of a democratic government is good because the people have a say in the governments decisions to an extent where it can alter the rulers choice on the law and or economy.
John Locke: Believed government should have natural divine right.
ReplyDeleteHobbes: Believed government should have control of everything the people do and say. His strength was that he had no form of limited power. The weakness on the other hand was that being that the people had no say, they would begin to revolt against their government.
Wollstonecraft: Believed people should be able to do what they want with no consequences. The strength of this was no one could tell you what to do, you had total freedom to do whatever you desire. The weakness was that this couldve lead to total anarchy.
I do believe that there should be some form of government. There needs to be a person to guide you. If not, the people would revolt against themselves and there would be anarchy all over the nation.
John Locke: Strong believer of natural and divine right. Also a centralized government, where everyone had freedom, and he also believed that power was from the people, and it should stay that way.
ReplyDeleteHobbes: He had believed the government should have complete control in every decision made. This made a very unstable type of government.
Wollstonecraft: Had a totally different outlook on government. She had been a strong supporter of women's rights, and believed that any individual should be able to govern themselves.
I believe John Locke had the ideal form of government and the idea of natural rights governing all is a wonderful idea.
1) John Locke- Believed that the the people deserved natural rights. *strong side*
ReplyDeleteIf the people didnt like the king they had the power remove him from his place. *weak side*
Thomas Hobbes- Believed that the government should have power over everything. *strong side*
The people did not agree wit this belief *weak side*
Jean-Jacques Rousseau- Power was divided in three branches Judicial, Legislative and executive branches. *strong side*
Some people disagreed with this belief. *weak side*
2) I believe that Communism is the ideal form off government because everybody is equal no matter what so there is less controversy within the people and the government handles everything.
3) I think that the people should not be able to rule because then there would be no order or control over the things that happen and everything would be total chaos.
