  1. There are many reasons for war. Money, supremacy, land, pride, the list can can go on and on, and weather these reasons are justifiable or not , it is a topic to be debated on for many years to come. Despite war being a negative thing, there are some justifiable sense in joining the war, for instance, in order to expand your territory you would have to take over the land of another country. The easiest and most broad way to partake in this action would be to go to war, under certain circumstances. Another reason would be an Arms Race, which would be a competition between different countries, most likely European, to see who had the best military or navy. The reasons of an Arms Race would be unnecessary completely, however with the sudden uprising of nationalism during the time periods of World War I, any subtle rivalry would turn drastic due to this prideful mindset. Overall, i think war can be an unavoidable thing completely, however certain aspects, more specifically Russia's embarrassment about not being able to support Serbia, would be unavoidable. War can be avoided, but various symptoms will eventually cause a conflict to happen.

  2. Going to war can be justified if a legitimate reason is given. It is not justified for a nationA to rob nationB for what nationA needs and nationB has. Although it seems justified for a nation to go to war after consistent or constant attacks/ harassment to that nation. This would be justified because it would a nation trying to get a another nation to back off. Also as Austria had its Archduke assassinated and its ultimatum turned down this would obviously cause a nation great anger. Making it choose a side along with allies who are directly related to the opposing side. This is a justified reason for going to war.

    1. I disagree because if a country needs money they have to do it however they can and if it comes to eat that's what they have to do

    2. I agree with Amir, the resistance of Serbia was just. There is really no one to blame for the collateral damage that was WWI

  3. Although war can be an ugly and terrible thing, I do believe that there can be some just causes to insight a war. Something like nationalism is an unacceptable reason to start bullying other countries because you have a superior army or government. But some just causes are because of an assassination or because of alliances. If you make a deal or treaty with someone, you are expected to hold that treaty and never invalidate it, because that's what allies do; they help each other out when necessary. If something happens that threatens that treaty, of course you are expected to act on it.
If the leader of your country (ie Franz Ferdinand), or even a country of which you are allied, is assassinated, it is okay to retaliate, because that leader or person can no longer do it themselves. Or maybe that would have been the spark that you needed to get the resources or land that you wanted because you can now go to war while claiming its for a just cause.
I don't believe that war is ever necessary, and is a tool of a superficial people with shallow personalities. Bullying and overpowering to get your way is well beneath the human race... :)

    1. Essence, I completely agree with you! I think war is a very shallow thing to do, and a very ignorant way of solving problems.

    2. I very much agree! "bullying" another country just because of pride, is not the way to go.

  4. Reason 1: To see who had the best army/navy. This was to show how strong a country was.
Reason 2: To expand territory. By doing so, an empire can grow stronger and other areas of the world will gain more culture.

  5. Even though the thought of war is terrifying and unreasonable to most people the causes that lead up to wars do make a valid point. For example if you have such a strong scene of pride in your country otherwise known as nationalism that shouldn't be a good reasons to go to war. Just because you may be strong and or smarter then someone else doesn't mean you should make them feel any smaller. But other reasons such as sticking to a a treaty that you made with another is a valid point. Its a valid point because if we have a strong trust with other countries and we help them then they will do the same in return. I for one do not like the thought of war. I think that war is just something people do when they can't figure what the right thing is to do. Overall there are some good reasons as to why war starts.

  6. The whole concept of war itself is completely and utterly disgusting however, if an acceptable reason is given to go to war I guess it makes it reasonable to go to war. One reason to go to war would be for nationalism. Nationalism is when one has pride for their country and is a loyal citizen. When countries' usually go to war regarding nationalism, that means they have to much pride in their country and think they are better than the rest so they strive to prove their point. Another reason would be imperialism. Imperialism is a huge reason why countries decide to go to war. Usually the reason for going to war for that reason is because another country wants to take over another country for many reasons, one being expansion of territory. I think both of the reasons are justifiable because these are legit reasons to try and show an improvement in their nation.

  7. I think war is both a reasonable and un reasonable thing, I think the only reason to go to war is that if one country is going against you, that reasonable to fight back. I also believe its bad to go to war, just because of how much pride you have in your country, which is why I dont think nationalism is a good enough reason because you might think youre better then another country but they might think they are better then you. I don't think being a "better" country makes it right to kill and fight. I think making your territory larger is a valid reason because it can help you be the better country, every country strives to be. I feel its also valid to fight for your allies, and be on there side and defend there country. Other than that I don't find anything a valuable reason to go to war.

  8. From the notes we took in class, there appears to be many reasons why war sparked between 2 or more nations. Two reasons discussed that I thought were reasons were Nationalism & Militarism.

Nationalism: this attribute of one can cause war because of an individual's pride. One can brag so much about their country which can be and come off as very provoking. This then leads the opposing nation to anger, jealousy, and rage which then causes war. You can only push someone so far before they crack.

Militarism: the reason why this can cause war is because of jealousy. A nation who is weaker than another can again become jealous because a nation has more military strength than they do. So in order to get the stronger nation on the same level as them, lower than them, or even steal their military strength, they go to war.

    1. Noah i agree with your answer. It is true that someone can provoke a war because of too much pride.

  9. Depending on the circumstance, war can either be justified or not. In a given circumstance nationalism can be the cause of war. Personally i do not think this is a justifiable cause. Not only does it serve no purpose, but it also is just a selfish mindset that makes people feel superior. Another unjustifiable reason for warfare is imperialism. When a country is conquering another, and the country being conquered fights back it can trigger a war. This is selfish because in most cases it is not imperative to seize a nation and make it you own. As you can see in both instances, greed can be a motive for many causes of a war to break out.

  10. Nationalism: I think nationalism is the cause for war because any country can have a lot of pride. Not saying having pride is bad but sometime it is because you get carried away with a lot of things like wanting to be the best country out their.

Alliance: Is another factor for war, Like in 1881 the triple alliance between Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary made a treaty to protect each other when they need help. Having alliances is good but some times you don't accomplish what you promise. For example Italy signed a secret treaty with France. Then Italy joined alliances with Russia, Britain and France.

    1. I agree Vanessa. People can get carried away and if someone gets carried away with nationalism, they will do a lot of things that are not best for the country. Other than that I don't feel that their is ever a reason for war.

    2. I agree with Vanessa, these were two valid reasons for the war to start that we learned in class.

  11. Two justified reasons for any of the countries to enter war are the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and Nationalism. I really don't believe that war can be justified for any reason. It is not right and not always necessary. The assassination of a leader is one reason people would feel so passionate to go to war with another country. Nationalism is when you have pride in your county. When someone has pride in their country, they will go to great lengths to protect and defend their country.

  13. One of the reasons that I think that World War One is justifiable is money. America made a lot of money from this war. Also a lot of countries attacked each other so that that could make money of it. Another reason I think that work war one was justified was Imperialism, a lot of countries wanted more power and one of the ways to do that is to get new territory and expand the rulers rein (land). Countries started to invade one another so that they would gain land and be more powerful. Even though there were a lot of greedy reasons I think that World War One is justified because without it America wouldn't be where it is right now.

  14. 1)One of the reasons that WW1 was cause was the fact that the two different alliances started forming, the allied powers and the central powers. Another reason or the "spark" of the war is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Task: Choose two reasons listed that you believe could be justifiable reasons for ANY of the countries to enter the war and explain why the reason is justifiable.

    Reason 1:
Imperialism: The idea of conquering land, gaining wealth. The British ruled about 25% of the Earth's surface at that time and because of that Germany became very jealous. So then Germany wanted to expand their country as well, but they couldn't because they were surrounded on every side by powerful countries. The British had so many colonies around the world where Germany wanted to expand but they couldn't so that forced Germany to demand more.
    Reason 2:
Nationalism: Being dominant/enforcing a certain religion, culture, etc on foreign nations. Germany wasn't fully recognized by the other countries as a tough competitor so they took that into violent matters to be considered a real force in world affairs.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Reason 1: There were alliances forming and countries attacked each other.
Reason 2: Nationalism because if you have pride in your country then why not fight for it?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I don't think war in general is a good thing, but if I had to choose two reasons to enter war it would be to gain more power and wealth. A lot of countries were able to gain more territory which is power. If you had a lot of territory then you would also be very wealthy. This would start a war because other countries would want to take over that same country and that country and you are trying to take over might not want to get taken over.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The only Justifiable reasons to go to war would be women's rights and nationalism. Women's Rights is an acceptable reason to go to war being that it is wrong for people to discriminate against females. Women were tired of being mistreated and they believed that the only resolution to this problem would be taking a stance and going to war. On the other hand, Nationalism is an acceptable reason because it unites a country as a whole and one's country is something to fight for which makes it defensible. People are taught to have pride in their nation and to fight for anything that may harm one's nation.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Reasons :

    1) To expand territory. By expanding territory more there is more power and more places to settle your own kind.
2)Women s Rights. This reason is justifiable because women were being mistreated and wanted to acquire the same rights as every individual. They wanted to speak up for all the wrong doings.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with Claudia, in that one reason for war was women's rights. Women protested for years in order to receive the same rights as men had.

    2. true, obviously by expanding territory it made the country feel extremely powerful

  20. Reasons:

    1. The first reason for Germany to enter the war was they wanted to expand their territory and also become a more powerful country. The biggest reason they wanted to do this was because they believed they were better than all the other countries and their nationalistic pride was at stake.

    2. United States entered the war because Germany shot down one of the United states ships. Another reason was because they wanted to help the allies because of all the bad attacks on the allies.

    1. Moe I agree with your first statement because one of the reason that the war started was because of Nationalism. When nationalism is brought upon a country that country will do anything to make themselves powerful because they are proud of their country. However I don't agree on your statement ; remember it's not about the US itself but it's also Europe too and the reason why the US entered was because Europeans fighting with each other and the US just happens to be one of the countries' allies. Overall I think you knew what you were talking about but I think you should research more before you write it out on the blog

  21. 1) Review the notes you took in class on the causes of WWI. Choose two reasons listed that you believe could be justifiable reasons for ANY of the countries to enter the war and explain why the reason is justifiable.

The two reasons that would bring countries into war is when Archduke Ferdinand has been assassinated and Alliances of many nations. When Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated, the Austrians declared war on the Serbians. This can lead to the second reason because when you declare a war there are allies most of the time to back you up. When Archduke was assassinated, the problem became worldwide because of the alliances that some countries have made with either Austria or Serbia.

    1. i agree that a just reason is retaliation from alliances.

  22. two reasons that war would be justified for any country is to create alliances and take part in imperialism.By creating alliances countries that were very small could have support from much larger ones. For example when they get into war their armies will be big combined and trade could flourish in both countries.By taking part in imperialism it allowed countries to expand their power and beliefs. Also build up their economy through trade.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I completely disagree with the very Idea of war. However, if a reason must be chosen, then it would have to be nationalism. nationalism is when one country has a lot of pride and as a result of that pride, they would take over another country because they believe themselves to be better. That would be a reason to go to war as a defense method.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The first justifiable reason for war is nationalism, this i because if your country look stronger then you basically don't have to rely on no one and everyone will not take advantage of you. The second reason is if someone is going to hurt you country then why not be able to take charge and fight back.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Womens rights and Nationalism are two justified reasons to go to war. The ending outcome being ending discrimination against women. War was the only way for women to get there message across, and to achieve justice. Nationalism would be a justified because the end outcome would be a stronger prouder nation. Defending there countrys dignity and pride wouldn't be all terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Even though war is costly, deadly, and some may consider in humane, many have used this terrible thing as a tactic for land power, and pride. An unjust reason for war is a war based on nationalistic views because it is like picking a fight or creating a problem that was never there to begin with something similar to a large country bullying a small one. a just cause for war is if it were used to protect your country from invaders or s broken treaty.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We can go to war for many reasons a reason we can go to war about is women rights. We fought for women rights so that we can get women to be just as equal as the men. Another reason to go to war would be to help our allies if they were to go to war with someone.

  28. Going to war can be justified if a legitimate reason is given.Their are many reasons for war. worth or nationalism. war could be helpful in protecting your state independents but it could also hurt with death tolls and money issues . I BELIEVE THEIRS ALWAYS A PEACEFUL ASPECT TO EVERYTHING

    ReplyDelete
  29. i think war can be justifiable and not justifiable.sometimes nationalism can be the cause of war. Personally i do not think this is a justifiable cause. mainly because i think it is pointless. Another reason for warfare which i think is justifiable is imperialism. when another country is trying to conquer your land i think you should start a war and fight for what belongs to you.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think that war is justifiable if your rights are being infringed upon. If some of your unalienable rights are taken away from you, you should have the right to create a war. Another reason for war is imperialism. Some countries want to continuously colonize lands, and it causes people to wage war against each other.

  31. 1) Review the notes you took in class on the causes of WWI. Choose two reasons listed that you believe could be justifiable reasons for ANY of the countries to enter the war and explain why the reason is justifiable. You may use the link below to get more information on the topic

I feel like ww1 was justified because there were many reasons for ww1 to happen, and little things just kept building up and building up until ww1 happened. Nationalism is a valid reason because although its great to love your country, people can get carried away and want to hurt people because of Nationalism. Also the fact that imperialism came in to play, because as countries grew and took over more places in the world, they felt more powerful and wanted to start a war

  32. Two reasons for the cause of WWI was nationalism and the assassination of Archduke. I feel that these are two very good reasons to go into war. Nationalism is when a country feels they are better than the other and would want to go to war, which is a justifiable reason. The assassination of Archduke is also another valid reason for any country to go into war because another country killed your leader and that's not ok.

  33. I believe one reason for WW1 to start was because of Arch Duke was assassinated by a man that was Serbian. I think that was justifiable because they killed the ruler of their country and they couldnt just sit there and let them do so. A second reason was probably because of Germany shooting down one of the United States Ships while WW1 was going on and i think it was justifiable because the Germans shot down a ship with hundreds if not thousands of people inside and they couldnt just do nothing about it

    ReplyDelete
  34. The whole reason for WWI was because of the assassination that happened with the Arch Duke by a Serbian nationalist named Black Hand. Austria's reaction was that they were going to threaten Serbia to go to war through an ultimatum. The ultimatum was severe and strict for the serbians, because Austria Hungary wanted to go to war.

  35. 1. nationalism: seeing which countries is better than others.
    2. the assassination of the archduke

  36. The assassination in my eyes was a good reason because someone went over board in murdering someone they shouldn't have, they cant expect them not to retaliate, as a leader id bring justice and show them who they messed with. I also think Imperialism was a good reason mainly because seeing multiple counties getting invaded and it only being a matter of time when they have their guns aiming at you and give the order to attack, you might as well bring the fight to them.

  41. There had already been past tension between European countries, it was only a matter of time. Countries were becoming aware of how powerful each other were getting therefore creating peace treaties and alliances with the countries they disliked the least. This is why when the first shots were fired every other country was dragged into the void of war.

  43. Yes, war is a terrible bloody thing, but sometimes war can be necessary for the right reasons. if you just go to war because you want money, power, or land then I think that's wrong. WWI started with the assassination with Arch duke. Yes people should be mad, very mad, but I don't that is a reason to start a war. another reasons that WWI started was because of alliances. Alliances in general are like big groups of friends, and if you are not in the group of friends, then you are in your own group of friends, but I honestly don't think that you should start an argument if you don't have friends. Another reason for war was nationalism, which is just to much pride for your country. Pride can be a good thing but in WWI it wasn't. I think that WWI can not be justifiable.
