ReplyDeleteThe answer to this question can vary. I agree that it is a negative force as well as a positive force to a certain extent. A way nationalism can be viewed negatively is that if one has too much pride in their country, and this given country invades another country or empire (britain invading india), they will try to impose aspects on them such as religion,lifestyle, industrialization etc. The reason this can be negative is because of how the country being invaded responds. From what we learned in class we can see that usually, people don't respond too well with ideas that are forced upon them, especially from outsiders, and the repercussions tend to be brutal. However on another note you can see that nationalism can be beneficial in many ways. An instance that exemplifies how nationalism can be positive is that, hypothetically speaking if everyone under a country is nationalistic this tends to mean that they have a lot of pride in their country. Because of this and the fact they think they're superior to everyone else, they will strive to be better and as a group and do things that better benefit their country. This mindset also deters people from rebelling against there own country due to the immense amount of pride they have for being the "Best country"

DeleteNationalism is a power that can destroy a country better or could make it worse. When the Europeans invaded India because they were so proud of themselves and thought they had everything together, and there way was the best way it was a negative effect. India became controlled by the Europeans and the Indian people lost there traditions, and religion because of the European control. However having nationalism in a country can also make it stronger and more united. So it could go both ways, but from what i have learned so far it mainly has had a negative effect.

ReplyDeleteNationalism isn't a complicated aspect. It's actually quite simple, yet interesting. What makes it interesting is that it has two faces--it's double sided. It can play a negative role or positive role. Nationalism can make a country stronger & confident, but on the flip side, it can raise its ugly head by one having too much pride in their country. This will then cause the crave & thirst for revenge from other nations not as strong which means war. Other nations will become envious and want what the stronger nation has by doing any and everything to see the what used to be strong nation/country crumble to pieces; showing no mercy.

DeleteI believe nationalism is mostly a negative force because it does more bad than good. Yes many can argue that it is good also but when a country and its people have pride they will not stop building that up until it becomes toxic. So as their pride in their country gets larger then the people might make drastic decisions that they think will better their country but most of the time it will negatively affect them in the long run. For instance when the British went into India they tried to dissolve the religion and culture by passing laws to ban customs,send missionaries, and force the people to do something against their religion. This caused a revolution and many British people were killed. Even though this is a minor effect to a country that had nationalism, it shows how this force is toxic and can cause a country to take grave measure to conquer and prove their strength.

seen in Germany. Hitter was placed into power and since his people had pride for

I believe nationalism is both a good and a bad thing. Nationalism can be a very good thing because it helps the society accomplish important things that would be almost impossible without consistency. Reflecting on the positive outcomes, when people are supporting their country or empire it makes either one a strong efficient unified country or empire. On the negative note, Nationalism can be negative because when people have too much pride in their country, they can also be selfish and they will take the liberty in invading other countries to benefit theres and doing this could causes rivals.

Overall, Nationalism can unify, and create an utterly indestructible country. In our eyes, we would see nationalism as a cruel thing, such as Hitlers genocide over Nazi-Germany, or the Europeans Indian take-over, where as the countries performing nationalism have blatantly abused the power given to them, however this "bullying" not only benefits the country, it benefits all of the countries it had obtained over its nationalist plot. This caused the Third Estate to revolt due to an increase of taxes imposed,, and Louis XVI was killed on the guillotine.
