If you have not used a blog before, take some time to click around and get used to using the blog. Remember, you can always ask questions! Much of the homework will be about analyzing videos, websites and images. You will often be asked your opinion and often be asked to respond to someone else's comment. Let's start!

Complete the following assignment:

1) Go to the following website Quotes about history and choose a quote that you like about history. Post the quote below and explain what it means and why you like it.

2) Explain what you like and/or don't like about history

3) Respond to at least one other person's comments.

  1. 1) "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." -Confucius
I think this means that whenever something bad happens to a person, we learn to deal with it and get past it. I chose it because this is something I too live by, because whenever I get into trouble, I deal with it, then I get past and don't let it keep me sad.
2)What I like about history is that it keeps everything that was important in the world recorded and people learn about it.

  2. "History is a vast early warning system" -Norman Cousins
I think that this quote by Norman Cousin is trying to say that history is what not to do in the future. It means that whatever happened in the past, we shouldn't do it in the future. I like history because it is like reading a book, and you learn something new about the past.

  3. "History will be kind to me for i intend to write it." -Winston Churchill.
This quote means that history is what you make it. If you do good for the world then the world will do good for you. If we do good trying to fix the problems like the economy for example it will keep getting better as history goes on. I like this quote because it's short but has a lot of meaning behind it. I like history because you can always improve it with the right decisions i like that we can give our children and grand children a better world by the decisions we make now but what i don't like about history is that we haven't been making the best decisions and now it has really affected our world. I like Anisa's comment on how history is like reading a book, when i read this i thought of all the history textbooks i have studied from in my life.

    1. Winston Churchill was an interesting guy. One quote that I like is "Victory is written by the winners". Winston Churchill was actually referring to that quote when he said what he said. He was saying that history is going to say good thing about him because he is literally going to write the history that others would be reading about. So obviously he would make himself sound amazing in his books.

  7. "History never looks like history when you are living through it." -John W. Gardner This quote means basically that every moment is history except when it's happening. The present always turns into the history. I liked this quote because it makes you think and really plays with your mind. It makes you think how the present is going to turn into the past. And because of that you wanna make sure that you don't take time for granted because soon it'll be over.

    1. I agree that every moment is history. Usually when people think history they think maybe back 100-200 years. Even the things that happen every day that seem insignificant are considered history, but usually we think of history as the major events that had an impact on many people's lives.

  9. "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
    George Santayana
The quote "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." by George Santayana is basically just relaying the fact that people who are ignorant to history will often make the same mistakes that have previously occurred. The reason for this is because if someone is aware of errors that were made in the past they can use that to their advantage by identifying the causes from that mistake and learning from it, However if they are completely oblivious to events that took place and situations that have previously occurred it makes them ignorant leaving the with great potential to repeat previous errors . One thing i like about history is that we are able to learn so much from other peoples actions. It is also really interesting how certain events led to other major situations that impacted history in various ways.

    1. I like the quote you used Caroline, in part it is similar to mine. It is indeed the ignorance of man that leads to the common errors of our history. Man will forever repeat their errors, only the names, the people, and the weapons used will ever change.

  10. History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon.
    -Napoleon Bonaparte

I think this quote means that history is only something that we depend on other people to agree upon. We never really know whether it's actually true or not because we weren't there to see for ourselves. I like this quote because I never actually thought about where we're getting the "historical facts" from. What I don't like about history is the amount of things you have to remember such as dates and important events because it's hard for me to remember all of it.

  11. "History is a relentless master. It has no present, only the past rushing into the future.to try to hold fast is to be swept aside"
    John F. Kennedy

This Quote by John F Kennedy means that history is very persistent, and constant. there is always something new that can be discovered where history is concerned, and something in the future can reveal the past. If you overlook many things and give up on history, you will be swept aside and not be able to find what you are looking for.

  12. 1) “I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past.” This quote means that what people what to see happen in the future is more important than what has already happened. I like this quote because it relates to what I feel about history. The past for me isn’t really important, what people plan to do in the future matters to me more.
    2) The one thing I like about history is learning about the people who fought for the things they wanted. Such as rights that were taken from them or that they think they deserve.

  13. "Few will have the greatness to bend history itself; but each of us can work to change a small portion of events, and in the total; of all those acts will be written the history of this generation"
    -Robert Kennedy
I have interpreted Robert Kennedy's quote as: although we cannot go back and change history, we can start now and create new history. This quote is my favorite because when most people think of history they think of events that happened 50 years ago and beyond. Many people (including myself) don't think of modern events in the past year or two that will be written into textbooks for future generations. History is not intangible. It is created everyday, and we live through it.
What I don't like about history is that it can be twisted through point of view and people from different parts of the world are going to believe in different ideas from the same event because of what they've been taught in a textbook. What one nation teaches about a war can be very one-sided and can be the complete opposite of what the opposing country decides to put in the textbooks. What I like about history is being able to look back on what made us who we are today. The inventions, the wars, the power struggles. It's also interesting to look back and think "what if". What if there was no american revolution? Where would we all be today?

Whether it is US History or Global History, us students always learn of the mistakes made in the past by people in history. Moral Values are like people's personal principles based on laws or religion. This quote is explaining that without mistakes or failures there would be no lesson to live by. moral values are meant to prevent or avoid mistakes or failures to committed.i found a interest in this quote because i have a lot of regrets and i feel like the only way to make me feel better about my past is to look at how it effected the way i am and think today. i like history because there are a lot of shocking and actually humorous things i learn about events or people and it makes think of history as a funny thing. i do not like when history is used as a weapon meaning that it is sometimes used a a reason to start a war or conflict interest.

This quote is describing how history repeats itself naturally because of people forgetting. For example history repeated it self by having not one but two World Wars. I really like this quote because I believe its really true because when you forget we don't remember the consequences either so we repeat our past with thinking of the consequences. 1) I really agree with this quote. I believe this quote is giving out the idea to prevent people from making the same mistakes again, or if not mistakes; keeping people from doing the same things over and over again. Studying history helps us reconsider decisions and believe it or not it will actually help us. Its like when people swear that they will never drink again after a bad experience, but do because they don't think about their history with drinking, and I believe that it is only by studying history that we can recognize this idea.

This quote intends on expressing that the future is a time of change and development, and should not revolve around negativity. In fact, many of the advantages we are accustomed to today, originated during different historical eras of the past. 1) I totally agreed/ enjoyed this quote because history really is one of the only things where you can go forward and learn from the past mistake, and history is what we make it. Our generation is the next to come and it has to learn form the mistakes made by our current and future leaders. Also what i really liked about this quote is that it really is just saying that as humans we will try and try to make the perfect world and it is our history. Also this quote says that we will never have the perfect world so history, or our pasts is the way not to live and that will continue forever.

  45. "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history." -- Aldous Huxley

    1) Aldous Huxley's quote means that man will never truly learn from their history, simply put. It is important to accept that a part of our history is to repeat our errors. This quote is very accurate, in my personal opinion, because it is almost impossible to stray from not repeating an error that has occurred in our history a multitude of times before. We can fight the urge, we can persuade others to not do so, but dictators will rise, and empires will indeed fall, it is nature, it is course of human history.
2)To be honest I was not fond of history until last year. The things that interest me the most are the Spartans, along with the ancient Greek city-states, and King Henry VIII of England. I became a bit intrigued with the Renaissance and its 'rebirth' and 'revival' of history, in its own time.

    1. I also liked this quote because like Gabby said, its about writing your own history. You make your own choices and the decisions you make now will determine your tomorrow and therefore become history.

  48. 1)“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it”. George Santayana. what this quote is saying that people who don’t know history will repeat history. I like this quote because it is true. If u dont know history or rather learn it u will repeat something someone else has done a long time ago. this also works with just your mistakes, if you don't learn from your mistakes you will repeat the same mistake.
    2) I really don't like history because it is a lot of remembering stuff. history is important but it is not my forte.

  49. "I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past"
    -Thomas Jefferson

To me this means that its better to look ahead then to dwell on the past. I like this quote because this is how I feel all the time. I feel like learning some of the history we learn, pointless!

  50. "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
    -George Santayana

    1) This quote basically means if you are clueless as to what has gone on in the past, and the mistakes or shortcomings that were made, as it's said that "great minds think alike", those same shortcomings and mistakes are bound to happen again.

    2) I suppose the only enjoyable thing about history is having the benefit to know what has happened in the past, and how that's related to the present and the future, but its really irritating to have to remember everything, sometimes I get the dates or the countries mixed up, even something like the world wars I tend to confuse sometimes. I think remembrance of the past events is definitely an issue with history.

  51. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

I think this quote means that everytime you fail at something, you should never give up even if you just feel like falling flat on your face because maybe in time you can never get that chance again and you just let it slip threw your fingers.

  52. "I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past"- Thomas Jefferson.

To me, this quote means that thinking about whats going to happen next is better than thinking about what's already happened. If you focus too much on the past then you could miss what's happening and what's going to happen. To hope for what's to come is greater than to dwell on what's already occurred. I like this quote because it's something I believe in. I believe that dreaming of the future is better than the history and the past.

I like and dislike history. I like history because some topics of the past can be kind of interesting but there's also some topics that drag on which I do not like.

  53. "I came, I saw, I conquered."
    - Julius Caesar

To me, this quote is saying that you arrive at a time where you see trouble is heading your way and everything is bashing you at once, but you overcome it because of the determination and ambition you have. Like me of course ... Watch the Prince Conquer. ♔

  54. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall."
    -Confucius

This quote is probably one of the quotes I would always like. This quote is basically saying that no matter what happens if you fail at doing something after you try again and put your best effort in it you will feel so great and accomplished you didn't give up on what you wanted to achieve in the first place.

  55. "That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history." -Aldous Huxley

I agree with this statement as people who don't remember history are doomed to forever repeat it. We look to history to strive forward, because without it we fall into the same trap.

  56. A world without nuclear weapons would be less stable and more dangerous for all of us.
    Margaret Thatcher

This quote means that if the world didn't have the atomic bomb or the nuclear bomb then the world would be more aggressive and have a lot more wars but since we have those weapons people have something to fear which keeps the world stable in a way, I love this quote because its true, years before the discovery of the nuclear bomb wars have been springing up like flowers in the spring and nations wouldn't think twice about going to war but ever since the discovery and mass production of the bomb since world war 2 and throughout the cold war and even today nations around the world have been very hesitant with going to war with bigger nations that posses these weapons of mass destruction.
What i like about history is how it shows the struggle of man throughout time from the very first ancient civilization( ancient sumer) to now.. it shows how man over came his struggles and fixed it to better his life and the world as a whole thats what i like about history.
